Before the storm of internet astrology, we read our horoscopes and dissected our charts on magazines like J14 and Tiger Beat, and for the more sophisticated books that were hidden away at the back of the library.
Astrology has existed for thousands of years and is not credited to any big aha-moment in history that defined the birth of this alleged pseudoscience. It was the Babylonians and Ancient Egyptians, though, who created a “rough draft” of what we know astrology to be today, by connecting myths to the constellations.
From using the stars to differentiate good times from bad times in Ancient China to determining compatibility with a partner, the way, we use astrology today has changed vastly. It’s really interesting to deconstruct how it’s been “optimized” to fit the digital age. Though – what we once considered a childhood curiosity and the desire to understand ourselves better had become a way we laugh at ourselves and curate pithy memes to escape our generational fears and uncertainties.
In the true spirit of escapism, let’s look at the signs as trendy outfits!
Aries (March 21- April 19). Element: Fire. Ruling Planet: Mars2
Taurus (April 20 - May 20). Element: Earth. Ruling Planet: Venus3
As an earth sign, Tauruses are generally pretty grounded, tender, and loving. I’ve gone for an effortless, “I’ve just thrown this on” outfit, a floral crop top, a suede mini skirt, and thigh-high boots.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20). Element: Air. Ruling Planet: Mercury4
With a Gemini, you get a 2-for-1! Don’t mistake this as being two-faced, but rather an ability to code-switch effortlessly. For this whimsy character, I’ve put together a mix of patterns – a wide-legged striped pant and a polka dot top. The bag and shoes also contrast in both structure and color.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22). Element: Water. Ruling: The Moon5
Cancers are big ole softies hidden behind a hard shell, tough to break through, but a friend for life. For these lowkey teddy bears, I picked a ditsy floral dress with a military-style boot, to emphasize both binaries that live within a Cancer.
Leo (July 23 - August 22). Element: Fire. Ruling: The Sun6
Virgo ( August 23 - September 22). Element: Earth. Ruling Planet: Mercury7
Loyal, hardworking, and fairly shy, Virgos are strong, yet somewhat conservative folks! For their banging ‘fit, I’ve matched an asymmetrical bohemian maxi dress with a nude, a cork wedge, and some retro sunglasses.
Libra (September 23 - October 22). Element: Air. Ruling Planet: Venus8
Scorpio (October 23 - November 21). Element: Water. Ruling Planet: Mars9
Passion, power, and stubbornness packaged in one person. They are assertive, too – get you a Scorpio friend for the “snap back into reality,” real talk moments. For a Scorpio inspired look, I’ve paired a firey, ruffle red dress with a clear-nude stiletto and big hoop earrings.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21). Element: Fire. Ruling Planet: Jupiter10
When I think of a Sagittarius, the first descriptor that comes to mind is “storyteller.” They are wonderfully social and can hook you with anything they say. My look for a Sagittarius consists of a printed smock dress, a pair of strappy sandals and a floppy hat.
Capricorn (December 22 - January 19). Element: Earth. Ruling Planet: Saturn11
The responsible friend- Capricorns are intelligent and reliable people – we could all stand to have at least one. For this sign, I’ve curated a casual outfit, styling a staple vintage wash mom jeans and a mustard top with a pair of pearly snap hair clips.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18). Element: Air. Ruling Planets: Uranus, Saturn12
Aquarians are said to be independent, humanitarians, and progressive. For a “power to the people” outfit, I’ve put together a black velvet leopard printed top, some faux leather shorts, and velvet sock boots.
Pisces (February 19 - March 20). Element: Water. Ruling Planets: Neptune, Jupiter13
Artistic, intuitive, wise, and compassionate. They also have a way of finding fantasy in the mundane and are often said to be divided between two worlds. For a Pisces going out look, I’ve paired a basic bralet with a printed satin-esque skirt and a white bootie. Elevate your look when it’s cold outside with a waterfall coat.
