We’ve all been there at the end of the day: staring into the mirror in disbelief and utter horror at the thought that our faces have looked like that all day. From oily noses to smudged mascara, we could blame it on the stuffy commute home on the tube, but you know we’re just lying to ourselves.
Many times, I have left the house feeling like Cinderella only to come home an ugly stepsister. It’s not pretty and after some thorough research (and a lot of setting spray) I’ve put together a list of a few little tips and tricks to help keep your makeup intact all day!
Prep your skin in the morning
It’s pretty much a given that prepping and properly preparing your skin in the morning will make a huge difference on how it behaves throughout the day. I find splashing my face with cold water before applying my toner and moisturize can not only wake me up (which is very much needed), it can also tighten my pores and make my skin ready for the next stage in my routine.
The Holy Grail of makeup bags: primer
More often than not, people tend to skip out on the primer, but honestly, they really shouldn’t. A good primer will be the Holy Grail of your makeup routine – and no, I’m not being dramatic. Not only does a primer feel amazing on your skin, but it also acts as a barrier between your makeup and your skin, and stops your foundation sinking into your pores and fine lines. Water-based primers are best to keep your makeup intact and your skin oil free!
Just like onions, layers make us stronger
Layering your makeup properly can make a huge difference. I must admit waking up and just slapping on a heavy layer of foundation and dotting concealer around my face may seem like a great idea (especially when I’m super tired with zero energy), but I can assure you when you come home, you’ll regret it. By applying your foundation and concealer layer by layer, it will stop the product from accumulating oily pools around your face – especially the corners of your nostrils – because you know that look isn’t cute.
Mattify your face with setting powder
I must admit, I have only just started using a setting powder after finishing my makeup (don’t judge me) and it has made a huge difference in the overall appearance and durability of my makeup. If you don’t like the idea of slathering your whole face in powder, just focus on the more oily parts of your face and slightly tap the powder (no circular motions) onto these areas.
Opt for waterproof mascara and eyeliner
For guaranteed smudge-free eye makeup at the end of the day, waterproof mascara and eyeliner will be your lifesaver. Not only will it stop pest control from hunting you down (think raccoon eyes), but waterproof makeup is normally more pigmented so you will be using less product in the long run!
Spray setting spray like your life depends on it
I always used to forget to use my setting spray, and only seemed to wear it when I was going out for drinks with friends. Now that I’ve added it into my daily makeup routine, my eye makeup in particular is lasting much longer throughout the day. Just a few spritzes of a good setting spray will make all the difference when it comes to home time!
Dunk your head in ice water (not joking)
Okay, I know how this sounds, but bare with me. Model Bella Hadid swears by this little method to keep her foundation looking flawless all day long. All you have to do is apply your foundation and translucent powder and then submerge your face in ice water for a few seconds and voila: an airbrushed perfect matte finished makeup (apparently)!
Just one last little thing: I know it sounds silly – especially when you want to look just as good as when you first left the house – but try not to re-apply your makeup throughout the day (unless it’s lip based), as it can leave you with a cakey dry mess and nobody wants that.
